On the night of 11 to 12 May 2008, St. Peter's Church, classified as a monument, was almost completely destroyed by fire. Only a few walls and the sacristy are still standing. The contents were also lost in the fire. The cause was probably a flare. At that time, a fair took place in Galmaarden on the occasion of Pentecost. There were no organized fireworks, but witnesses have heard that flares were fired after midnight.
