The Langelede, canalized in 1774, formed, together with the Moervaart and the Durme, and the numerous smaller watercourses, such as the Zuidlede... one large water complex, which was widely used for transporting peat, fruit and pottery pots. The first bridge over the Langelede is called the Pottersbrug, after the former potter's quarter. Later, since the 1860s. these watercourses were used for the transport of sugar beets to the sugar factory in Moerbeke-Waas. Nowadays they are only used for tourist purposes, such as fishing, cycling, hiking and ice skating in winter. It is therefore a very attractive watercourse with its idyllic bridges and its picturesque corners, it is actually fairytale in all seasons.
