This cemetery was only used during the final year of the war, when it contained both British and French soldiers. The French remains were either removed to another cemetery after the war or else were repatriated back to France.
Westouter remained in Allied hands throughout the war, although the Germans approached to within 2 kilometres during their Spring Offensive in 1918. The village was almost completely destroyed, with the exception of De Corneblomme Brewery, which remained reasonably intact.
