On 19 October 1914, Hooglede was captured by the German military. The area quickly became a stage area. Hooglede became a final resting place for the many German soldiers. The cemetery in the Beverenstraat was created in 1917 when the cemetery of Hooglede was no longer sufficient for the increased number of deaths. New cemeteries were created, including "Ehrenfriedhof Hooglede Ost" along the Beverenstraat. After the liberation by the French, about 4100 German soldiers were buried on the territory of Hooglede.
