The Beukelaremolen used to be called the Steentjesmolen, dates from 7 January 1777 and was located in Poperinge. Although the name suggests otherwise, the Steentjemolen was indeed a wooden standard mill. In 1923 Modest De Busschere from Merkem bought the Steentjemolen for 15,000 francs. His mill, the Luigem- or Noordeindemolen, was completely destroyed during the First World War, like the entire village of Merkem. In 1923 the mill was founded on the Rodesteenstraat, opposite the place where its predecessor had stood. It was restored and thanks to the close cooperation with VZW De Boot, the mill, now a monument, is running like never before! Currently, 5 millers are active at this mill, which grinds one every three days.
