The bronze Verbiest statue is located at the foot of the Church of Our Lady on the Market Square of Pittem. It was founded by the Verbiest Committee in 1910. During the First and Second World Wars, the monument was hidden to protect it from the hunger for bronze of the German occupiers. In 1940 the statue was slightly damaged and was restored in early 1988 in the bell foundry.
The impressive statue depicts Verbiest as a Chinese mandarin, resting in a decorated armchair. He rests his head on his right hand and points with his left hand to the celestial globe. Next to it are crucifix and some books. In the visitor center of Verbiest on the Market of Pittem you can discover even more about Father Verbiest.
