The current stone top crawler was built in 1834 to replace a stake mill. According to documents, the first mill was already located here around 1275. The mill Ter Hengst was already mentioned in 1539 as "den hyncxst", in 1567 as "hinxtxmeulne" and in 1588 it was called "Ter Gheynst". It is also listed as a windmill "ten hingst" in the land book of Nukerke from 1768-1774. The wooden stake mill was destroyed by lightning in 1831. The new mill was originally used as an oil and grain mill. In 1872 the oil butchery was removed and in 1949 all milling activities were stopped. The mill was granted the status of "protected heritage" on December 30, 1960. In 1969 a new flight was installed, but was torn off during a storm on November 12, 1972 and restored again in 1976. In the period from 2004 to 2007, maintenance work was carried out by "Thomaes Molenbouw bvba" from Beveren-Roeselare. The mill is grinding, has four stone pairs and now serves as a grist mill.
