The letter of alderman of Bochoute is a charter from May 1249. It is one of the oldest official documents written entirely in Dutch and also bears an explicit date. The charter was issued by the aldermen of Bochoute, now a hamlet in the Flemish village of Velzeke (Zottegem), and sealed a land transaction between the gentleman farmer Boudewijn Molniser (Molenijzer) from the Bocholout hamlet of Dallem and the Ghent citizen Hendrik van den Putte. It is the earliest surviving deed written in the Dutch language. Latin was common as the official language for charters and deeds.
