Denderhoutem is the home of daensist Aloïs De Backer who was involved in the foundation of the Christian People's Party. Since 1900, De Backer has been a member of parliament for the Daensists. In 1904 he died at the age of just 46 and was replaced in parliament by Pieter Daens.Aloïs De Backer was one of the least leftists within the Daensist party and an outspoken anti-socialist. Perhaps that is why the socialist Boon does not paint a very good picture of De Backer in Pieter Daens: he emphasizes the 'tame attitude' of De Backer, who always remained true to his anti-socialist views.
