The Koutermolen is a unique stake mill whose first traces can be found in 1372. The mill belonged to the possessions of the Saint Bavo Abbey. During religious wars in the second half of the sixteenth century, this ban mill was destroyed. The present mill was built in 1614. The last major restoration dates from 1977, in which the mill was moved 88 meters to obtain a better wind catch. The mill is still grinding and so with sufficient wind it can often be dusty due to the spreading flour.
Every third Sunday of the month the mill is open to visitors free of charge.
