Botanist Adolf Papeleu (1811-1859) was the pioneer of commercial tree nursery and rose cultivation. After his expeditions in Central America, he settled on the Boskant heath in 1847. His 65-hectare farm mainly grew spruce and fruit trees and exported to France and Germany. After his death, his foreman took over the nursery and some workmen started their own businesses. Wetteren and the surrounding area became a patchwork of tree nursery plots.
