The Pond Area consists of more than 1,000 ponds, together good for about 700 ha of water and reeds. It extends over Hasselt and Genk. Many rare animal and plant species feel at home here. Without this pond region, species such as the bittern and the tree frog would already be extinct in Flanders. In the Vijvergebied there are also the tourist attractions such as Bokrijk, Kelchterhoef, Hengelhoef, Domein Kiewit, Bovy and Circuit Zolder.

The Pond Area Midden-Limburg is part of the European protected Natura 2000 areas and with European LIFE+ support investments are made in ecological improvements. These aim, among other things, to increase the population of endangered species such as the bittern and the tree frog. The project pays extra attention to the combination of ecology and economy and the key role that education can play in this.
