Tithe pole

Description

One of the three preserved pile stones in Sint-Margriete on the boundary line of the tithe rights of the Saint Bavo Abbey and of the chapter of Tournai. In the region, tithe areas were already demarcated in the 13th century by the Abbey of Saint Bavo, by St. Peter's Abbey and by the chapter of Tournai, namely shortly after the demarcation of the parish boundaries in 1244 and 1249. The southwest-northeast facing border between the tithes of Sint-Baafs, Sint-Pieters and the chapter of Tournai, also the parish border between Sint-Jan-in-Eremo and the disappeared parish of Roeselare (now Sint-Margriete), later formed the municipal border between Sint-Margriete and Sint-Jan-in-Eremo. In 1482, the Sint-Baafsabdij placed four poles on the border already drawn in 1244, one of which is still preserved in the Sint-Margrietestraat. The pile stone in Sint-Livinuspolder was placed in 1654 on the site where a pole was also placed in 1482, following the installation of new boundary posts after the diking of several small polders in 1652 that gave birth to the Generale Vrije Polder. The pole is also recorded on figurative maps from the 18th century, for example a map of 1710 in the church archive of Sint-Margriete and a map of the Jeronimuspolder in Waterland, where four pile stones indicate the tithe area of the Sint-Baafskapittel in 1736. The sandstone pole in question is approximately 1m50 high in total and is quite well preserved. It was recently cleaned in 1992-1996 and 2003. However, the pole must have been turned when it was relocated. Originally, the tithe area of Sint-Baafs was located north of the border and that of Tournai south of it. Today, on the southeast side of the headpiece, the street side, is the inscription SB, another side (northeast) is divided in two by a vertical line with the letters SB on the left and "Dor/nick" on the right, on the northwest side one also reads "Dor/nick" to the right of a vertical line. Protected as a monument by ministerial decree of 03.06.2005.
