The Austrian Joachim Zinner was at the cradle of the current look of the Sonian Forest. In the 18th century, this forester began to systematically plant beech trees. You can still find beech trees that he planted, including in the Zwaenepoel forest reserve. This new approach to forestry was highly necessary, because this enormous Coal Forest, so called because a lot of charcoal was made here, was considerably degraded. Zinner had straight lines drawn in the forest to carry out systematic replanting in zones. Birch and ash trees had to make way for beech trees.
