Beyond the fence, south of the infirmary and near the cemetery and gardens, is the infirmary. This courtyard contains several buildings, but the most beautiful construction is located along the Dender.
In the XVIIth century there was already a building here. Thousands of French and Spanish soldiers were cared for by the monastics during the wars of Louis XIV.
The name 'building of the Spaniards' commemorates these soldiers. The 9 stone arches over Tuscan columns date from the XVIIIth century. The rest of the building was added in the XIX century.
In the beginning of the XXth century, the building became a shelter for 'old women', in short, a forerunner of our current geriatrics.
A road takes us from the hospital to the porte Avau (rebuilt in the 50s after a bombing), past a number of workshops.
