The Arboretum of Groenendaal was founded in 1897, the year of the world exhibition that took place in Brussels and Tervuren. It was progessively expanded during the following years. The educational value of this should be underlined It has a collection of about 400 native and exotic trees. In 1917 it was already almost 14 ha in size. The 18th-century priory farm houses the forest museum and the Educational Forestry Centre. A more recent building near the arboretum houses the Institute for Forestry and Wildlife Management. Part of the forest serves as a forest reserve.
