During World War I, the church of the hamlet of Oud-Stuivekens stood on this spot. The Franciscan friar Edouard Lekeux installed an observation post in the church tower, which he manned himself for 16 months. In 1916, the Belgian engineers built a concrete machine gun and observation post between the remaining walls of the church tower. After the war, Brother Lekeux erected a memorial chapel for Our Lady of Victory, which is said to have saved him during his stay in Oud-Stuivekens.
