In Klerken there was already an auxiliary chapel of the parish of Esen in the 10th century. The chapel was extended in the 16th century with a south and north aisle. Klerken was already a parish (from 1444). Like almost all churches, this church was destroyed during WWI. It was rebuilt in 1922 by architect Dinnewet. It was inaugurated in 1930. The architectural style is Gothic, but this is less pure than it used to be. Klerken's patron saint is Saint Lawrence who was venerated against ulcers and skin diseases.
