Description

Originally, the Scheldt meandered with a graceful swing between Wetteren, Kalken and Schellebelle further seaward. At the end of the 19th century, in order to shorten the winding shipping route, workers dug a passage along the centre of Schellebelle. The straightening of the Scheldt left behind a cut-off meander: the 'Old Scheldt'. This was largely filled in and planted with poplars. A break in style with the open landscape that characterizes the lakes. With the works as part of the Sigma Plan, the poplars will be cut down and replaced by open water and reeds.
