Just at the beginning of World War I, Etienne Vermeersch's mother and her sister moved away from the advancing German army with the neighbor and his family. Their parents and the rest of the family remained at the scene. When the sisters were on the other side of the Yser, the Yser plain was flooded. The girls could not go back and had to flee further into France. They stayed away for 4 years. During that period, the girls' father (Etienne Vermeersch's grandfather) promised that he would build this chapel if his girls ever returned. And that's what they did, after the war. A spicy detail. During a dream, the girls' father saw the Virgin Mary holding a protective cloak over the girls. And then he was convinced that one day his daughters would return safely.
