During his time in Latem, Van de Woestijne often met up with friends (Julius Mac Leod, Adolf Herckenrath) in the Nenuphar, which is now a restaurant: "This was a pleasure garden, which was located on the banks of the river, and from where one had a very clean view of the Lys. (...) As soon as Cyriel Buysse heard that we were there, he came to the end. Then a lot of half krieks were drunk. (...) Sometimes it happened that Emile Claus was with us, and then it was 'the bouquet'. There was no talk of going home and we stayed in the 'Nenuphar' until our eyes closed from the often."
