The Ganzepootvijver owes its name to its shape. The pond has three bulges that resemble the toes of a goose leg. It is part of the source area of the IJse, whose course is characterized by the dozens of landscaped ponds. The Ganzepootvijver is the first of that series. There are also the Keizer Karelvijver and the Koningsvijvers. They were built by the former priory of Groenendaal by damming IJse and served to supply the monastery with fish. Vandermaelen's maps no longer show the Ganzepootvijver and the ponds are no longer mentioned on the maps of Dépot de la Guerre from the mid-19th century. This indicates that the impoundment did not happen again.
