Description

Located on a slight height in the village center and shaded by a lime tree and yew trees. Surrounded by a sandstone wall, rebuilt in 1858 with checkered neoclassical mullions with ornamental vase at the west entrance, one dated 1775 modified to 1875; similar fence pillars to the northeast, ANNO 17(55?). The plan reveals a nave and two aisles of five bays, a crossing tower, two transept arms of one bay with flat closure, a choir of two and one blind bay with flat closure and a sacristy of one bay against each transept arm. Gothic church with 18th- and 19th-century alterations; completely restored in 1875 to a design by architect M. Van Assche. Sandstone construction with several parements under slate roofing. West façade: neo-Gothic gable (19th century) with roof and shoulder pieces; Reused Gothic door frame (15th century) and above it a large pointed arch window, flanked by buttresses and lancet windows. Side aisles under pent roofs (before 1875 with central aisle under one roof); four eastern bays from 1749, except for the lower part of the northern longitudinal wall (14th century) and two western bays from the 15th century; Arched windows under profiled drip mouldings. Strongly projecting transept arms under steep gable roofs with eaves and shoulder pieces. North cross arm from the 14th century, with double corner buttresses (sandstone) and large pointed arch window. South cross arm from the 14th century. West wall later updated with brick; Pressed pointed arch window between buttresses. On the southeast corner: stair tower from around 1890. Later, unfinished octagonal brick tower on square substructure (16th century); spindle and wooden slate-clad bell chamber (1777); timepieces at the top dated 1770. Choir under steep gable roof (14th century). Side elevations with lancet windows between double-cut buttresses. East gable with roof on shoulders and large pointed arch window between triple carved buttresses. Sand and brick north and south sacristies from the 18th century. North sacristy against transept arm under adjoining pent roof; Stab-arched window with drip moulding and a cross-arched door in a sandstone frame (brick parement to the east). South sacristy with arched window with drip moulding under lame roof. Round arches on sails with octagonal base and square cover. Tower on simple crossing pillars, later built in (16th century); year 1749 on north wall of intersection. Roof by means of cross rib vault (with stucco) for central and side aisles, wooden barrel vault (16th century?) with stucco (1749) for north cross arm, cross vault (17th century, with stucco from 1749 and roof trusses from the 18th century) for south cross arm; wooden barrel vault (19th century) for choir. Mobile: Paintings "Mary and Elisabeth" and "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" (Romanticism, 19th century?). Neo-Gothic high altar (1899) and Baroque side altars (1748); choir stalls of 1899; wainscoting of 1789 and 1933; communion rail of 1899; pulpit by Jan Frans van Geel (1820); confessionals of 1789 and 1887. Rood screen from the 18th century.
