Church of Our Lady

Description

In the church of Beigem there used to be four valuable paintings. Masterpieces. They were painted by a 'Flemish Primitive', called the Master of Beigem, but have never been seen again since the First World War. The church burned down in 1914. Are they  Stayed in the fire? And what is the link with Dijjon and Philadelphia? The Master of Beigem always leaves a specific signature on his paintings. namely, the coat of arms of the noble patron, usually prominent figures from the court of Charles V. It cannot be ruled out that the works found in Dijon and Philadelphia were originally part of the same altarpiece as the four missing paintings by Beigem. Their experiences up to the twentieth century are unclear: the Philadelphia panel was donated to the museum in 1917 by the American collector John G. Johnson; that of Dijon was purchased for Hermann Göring during the Second World War and confiscated by the Allies after the war.
