Planted north of the street, on the corner with the current Sint-Pietersstraat descending to the Scheldt, with still partially walled cemetery with iron gates. Oldest mention of a church in a diploma of Emperor Otto II of 977. In 1117, Burchard, Bishop of Cambrai, gave the patronage of the church to the abbot Godefridus of Ename until the end of the 18th century. The original Romanesque church, dating back to the 12th century, took the form of a three-aisled cruciform church with a square crossing tower and a straight choir and was built entirely of Tournai stone. Only the substructure of the tower with heavy pillars and round arches has been preserved to this day. In the course of the 13th-14th century, the church was modified in Scheldt Gothic, including the octagonal section of the tower, which has been preserved. In the 18th century, important changes are reported. This church is known to us through a drawing by A. Van Lokeren from 1840 and the description by F. De Potter and J. Broeckaert. From 1885 onwards, architect Auguste Van Assche submitted plans to restore the choir, transept and tower and to enlarge the church. After renovation and enlargement of the nave, the choir and transept were found to be in poor condition and were reconstructed. Only the tower was preserved and restored. New church in neo-Scheldt Gothic style built entirely of Tournai stone.
