Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The rather old parish of Our Lady, sometimes considered the mother church of Meeuwen, Gruitrode and Ellikom, is probably a foundation of the chapter of Our Lady of Maastricht. This chapter had the right of patronage and one third of the tithe. It later ceded the right of patronage to the abbey of Herkenrode, which also owned one third of the tithes. The parish priest also owned one-third. The church is first mentioned in 1157. She held the rank of quarta cappella. It is likely that the chapter of Our Lady and/or the abbey of Herkenrode were responsible for the maintenance of the nave, the parish priest for the maintenance of the choir, and the municipality for that of the tower and the apparently only aisle. In 1726 it is mentioned that the choir, nave, aisle and tower have been demolished and repairs are underway; The municipality was given permission to demolish the aisle, but then had to close off the nave on that side and provide it with windows. The municipality is responsible for the maintenance of the tower, which had fallen into disrepair in 1726, but was restored. The old church was built of Maas boulders.
