High on the Wijngaardberg, in the middle of unspoilt nature, stands the majestic, 10-metre-high statue of the Sacred Heart. The imposing statue of Christ, which protectively stretches out its hands over Wezemaal, impresses many walkers. In 1914, at the start of the First World War, the windmill of Wezemaal stood on this spot, high above Wezemaal. Farmers from Wezemaal could have their grain ground here. From the mill one had a magnificent panorama of the entire region: a perfect vantage point for the German troops to overlook the entire area. To prevent this, the Belgian soldiers deliberately destroyed the mill. It burned out completely. For years, this place was the favorite playground for children. In that period there was a great devotion to the Sacred Heart and within the parish community the idea grew to place a Sacred Heart statue on this bare spot. The parishioners collected the necessary money and in 1925 they diligently started building the statue.
On September 5, 1926, the statue, a work of art by sculptor M. Van de Capelle from Anderlecht, was solemnly inaugurated by Mgr. Tessens, representative of Mgr. Van Roey
