After a long turn to the right, take the Lendrik hiking trail on the left at the fork, in the Groene Borredreef. Instead of turning right after about a hundred meters to follow the Lendrik hiking trail via the Ganzenvoetweg, you first walk for a while. After about fifty meters you will see a unique, large specimen of the honey tree on the left between some other trees. Turn back on your steps and continue your way via the Ganzenvoetweg. You ignore the Brugweg.
You bump into a particularly beautiful plane tree that is getting old in a very gnarled way. This is how you get to the Olmendreef. Notice the large hollow linden on your left side.
At the crossroads you will see the Lenterik district on the right, on the other side of the asphalt track. It was once fashionable living on the left bank of the canal zone. Between the Drie Fonteinen park and the Van Praet bridge there are still several former country houses that now serve as ordinary homes or as a clubhouse for various associations.
At this five-junction you take the narrow path more or less straight, so that you almost end up on the outside of the park. On the left through the trees you can see a pond where Canada and Nile geese often come to rest. Here and there a mallard or coot swims, sometimes a moorhen crosses your path. Notice the idyllic bridge on the left, among the foliage. The water quality is not optimal. It is what is called eutrophic, which means that there are (too) many nutrients in it. These are mainly caused by leaf fall and from people who feed the ducks. The banks are reinforced with wooden shoring, a not very interesting intervention for nature. After all, the transition between water and land is very abrupt, making interaction virtually impossible. In addition, there are many carp that make the water cloudy with their rooting movements on the bottom. Sight hunters such as the pike, who need clear water to see their prey, are less satisfied with this. The Agency for Nature and Forest wants to create a more natural balance in and around the pond without spoiling the fishing pleasure.
Ponds full of water
The pond is sufficiently filled all year round. You have undoubtedly noticed that it is located at just about the lowest point of the domain. Here were once the rich seepage areas of the Senne. That pushing groundwater still comes to the surface today, via the pond bottom. Furthermore, the feeding of the pond is of course also done by the rain. If the water level gets too high, there is an overflow that flows into the Zeekanaal.
