On the waterfront of the Nete, opposite the PIME, you will see a pumping station at the point where the Itterbeek flows into the Nete.
The water from the Itterbeek flows up to the dike and then flows gently through an adjustable lock with a non-return valve into the Nete. When there is an increased influx of water, the pumping station kicks into action and the water is spewed through the 2 large pipes into the Nete at a speed of 1,400 liters per second per pump. An impressive spectacle!
The pumping station was built after the severe floods of 1998, and was one of the province's measures to better protect the valley. The Itterbeek flows through an intensively built-up area, as a result of which part of the valley area has been taken over and can no longer be occupied by water. The source of the stream is in Beerzel, close to the highest point of the province of Antwerp, the Beerzelberg. Due to the large difference in height, the Itterbeek has to deal with large flows during heavy precipitation, causing the water to run downstream faster.
In addition to the pumping installation, the province has also constructed a large flood plain in Koningshooikt, the Jutse Plassen. This beautiful nature reserve is well worth a visit!
