Description

We go over a thousand years back in time and we go to the other side of the archaeological park. Shortly before 1000 Herman Verdun founded with support from the Ottonian Emperor Otto III, a stone fortress here to defend the borders of the empire. Near the castle was a thriving trading post. Ename in 1047 was conquered by the Count of Flanders, Baldwin V. He founded here in 1063 a Benedictine abbey. In the two centuries that handles extensive refurbishments. Late 16th century, the abbey to endure heavy. Around 1580 it was completely destroyed during the occupation of Oudenaarde by the Ghent Calvinists. Around 1595 was started with the reconstruction of the abbey. Not until 1700 was the abbey completely restored. With the French Revolution, the abbey was abolished. All possessions were sold. The monks left the abbey in 1795. Shortly thereafter, she was sold as a quarry.
