Roomkouter 'insect hotel'

The construction of a nature house has started at the Roomkouter nature reserve in Steendorp. This will be an ecological house where nature associations will find a place to come together. In addition, the nature house will also become a base for schools and groups that want to move into nature. In anticipation of the opening, an insect hotel has already been put into use. "Call it an animal hotel. Because the hotel is built in such a way that not only bees and wasps can find a place there, but also butterflies, hedgehogs and even bats. In the summer they can use it as a nesting and resting place, in the cold months to hibernate", says Alderman for Nature Hugo Maes (CD&V). The nature house and the insect hotel together cost 170,262 euros, for which the municipality received the support of the province, the Flemish government and even Europe. (JVS)
