The arboretum was created in 1930 to study how non-native species grow here. Additional plantings followed at regular intervals and had a significant peak around 1942 and quite recently in 2002. Until 2002, the arboretum underwent few structural changes. Since then, the administrators have been working with a new management vision. Whereas in the past this 'tree garden' was mainly of interest to specialists, the manager now wanted to make it attractive to everyone. Uniform collections gave way to a mosaic of groves, solitary trees and open spaces, while the collection of shrubs and trees became larger and more varied. It collected about 300 different tree and shrub species on an area of 9 hectares, both non-native and endemic. The eye-catcher is the millennium tree, a Japanese Zelkova, a relative of the elms that are almost extinct in our country. THE PATH OF AD can be visited through the Arboretum. Ad Wouters from Haasrode has made many sculptures in the forest from specially selected stumps and tree trunks. It is a separate hiking trail.
