NL : Medlars need dry, calcareous soil and prefer to be in the sun. They were reportedly brought to Europe by the Romans from Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). In May - June, large white flowers come to this shrub or small tree. They have a unique sweet smell. The flesh of the medlars softens in autumn after a few light frosts. After a while, the orange fruits become dark brown and sweet. They seem to be rotting: 'As rotten as a medlar'. Eating medlars is a good remedy for abdominal running.
