7. Yew or venom tree - If (Taxus baccata)

EN : Yew is a slow-growing coniferous tree, which is very suitable for creating tight evergreen hedges. It owes its name to the deadly toxin baccatine in almost all parts of the plant. A few hundred grams of needles can kill a cow or a horse. Nevertheless, the drug taxol is prepared from this substance with which some types of cancer are treated. In the past, the strong and resilient wood was used to make bows and arrowheads were dipped in its poison. The oldest specimens in the Botanic Garden are around 150 years old.

FR : L'if est un conifère à croissance lente, qui convient bien à la réalisation de haies bien droites qui demeurent toujours vertes. Presque toutes les parties de la plante contiennent un poison mortel, la baccatine. Quelques centaines de grammes d'aiguilles peuvent tuer une vache ou un cheval. Cette substance fournit néanmoins le taxol qui est utilisé dans le traitement de certains cancers. Le bois solide et élastique était jadis employé pour fabriquer des arcs et les pointes de flèches étaient trempées dans le poison de l'arbre. Les exemplaires les plus âgés du Jardin botanique ont environ 150 ans.
