NL : Holly is one of the few native, evergreen shrubs. It grows best in dry humus-rich deciduous forests and tolerates shade well. It has prickly leaves at the bottom of the plant, usually not higher up. This is not necessary because large herbivores cannot reach that high. The holly is dioecious, only on the female plants come the beautiful blood-red berries. Since ancient times, holly twigs have been used as decoration at parties, which is why we associate holly with the end-of-year celebrations.
