Fête de la Wapi à Vélo

The inter-locality agency IDETA and the Maison du Tourisme de Wallonie Picarde present Wapi by Bike Festival. Wear a smile and come and find out more about picardy Wallonia’s cycle nodes network. The meeting-point for the outing is the Grand Place in Tournai, at 9 am – it will be a fun cycle touring outing, open to all-comers, an artistic and whimsical day out for all. You don’t need to be a Tour de France cyclist, as the family-oriented route for the day covers 18 km (about 11 miles), through the beautiful landscape in our area, and the bike ride will be punctuated by recreational stops and other unusual happenings. At lunchtime, there will be a big picnic at the Fours à Chaux (lime kilns) in Cherq, which will feature entertainment. Above all, don’t hesitate to customise your bike, polish your bike’s spokes, and pump up your tyres! The dress code is smart cycling shorts and jerseys, or classy khaki shorts, or really zany outfits, however you feel like dressing! Free events to delight the young and the not-so-young alike. Likewise the route for the day – everybody will be able to cover the 18 km (about 11-miles) itinerary! THE PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY IN DETAIL: - From 8.30 am: special cyclists’ breakfasts available for the price of €6.50, at “L’Orchidée”, “Le Beffroi”, and “La Belle Vue” (at Grand Place) - 9 am: Meet at the Grand Place in Tournai – to get your bike personalised, to rent a bike (you can reserve bike in advance by emailing [email protected] or by calling 0032 498 714 953) and to have your bike undergo a safety check - 9.30 am: Inauguration, with great pomp, on bikes of course! 10 am: Departure from Grand Place on an itinerary of 18 km, accompanied by music! Events, whimsical interludes from people, karaoke to go, living exhibitions, and so on and so forth - 1 pm: Picnic at the Fours à Chaux (lime kilns). Bring your own bite to eat or take advantage of the various types of snack food on offer onsite. Bar facilities available. Music, concerts and events for the young and old alike will be on offer! - 4 pm: Departure of the group of cyclists for Tournai and even more surprises upon arrival back in town!
