During the war, the Redemptorist Monastery (Redemptoristenklooster) was a hospital for the sick and wounded of both sides.
A field hospital in the town
A team of local doctors, Franciscan nuns and friars from the monastery took them in. The straw mattresses in the field hospital were slept on by a colourful variety of wounded, front-line soldiers who had arrived at the Belgian front from all corners of the world.
Memorial Service
In addition to the physical nursing of sick and wounded soldiers, the German authorities permitted a memorial service in February 1917, in memory of the 24 soldiers who died in the hospital. The people of Roeselare flocked there to offer their last respects to the dead prisoners of war.
