From the 10th century onwards, dozens of dikes were built north of Antwerp to protect the land against flooding from the Scheldt. These dikes closed off the higher grounds from the wet tidal nature. One of those dikes was the Ekersedijk. In later times, storm surges caused breaches through the dikes and created 'wheels' or depressions in the landscape. In the Bospolder, such wheels were created in the 17th century. They are still present along the Ekersedijk, where the dike makes a winding movement. The wheels in the Bospolder remained untouched for a long time, but were also repainted in the 1960s. With the nature conservation project, they were restored.
