Centuries ago, the Meetkerkse Moeren, covering 570 hectares, were a peat bog. In the Middle Ages, peat or fuel was extracted here down to the underlying sand layer. Today, the Moeren are almost islands between the canal and the polders. You will see endangered plants such as the broad orchid and more than 30 different bird species that come here to breed here every year. From cormorant to buzzard! If you want to explore the beautiful nature of the Meetkerkse Moeren extensively, you can go out with the Meetkerkse Moeren walking route (15 km).
