The Scheldt forms the border between Spiere on the one hand, Pottes and Hérinnes on the other. The Scheldt used to have a very large meander here that made shipping on site very difficult. In 1920 the stream was straightened and its course in the municipality is almost completely straight. The lock of Spiere was built in that period. It bridges a height difference of two meters.
