Description

As in other towns and villages, the people of Beveren had different attitudes towards the occupying authorities, which brought scarcities and restrictions, and the individual soldiers. The German lad in the attic room appeared to have little in common with the barbarians who had raged through Beveren on ‘Dreadful Monday’ (Schuwe Maandag).
