In the 19th century, the centuries-old layers of undigested plant remains were also excavated. This peat soil was reclaimed by hand on a large scale in the Zig and dried to be used as peat. That peat was used as fuel in the hearth. This reclamation determined what the core of the Zig looked like at the beginning of the 20th century: a deepened zone with eight ponds between Abeek and Lossing. In the 1950s, the ponds were drained and large parts of De Zig were planted with poplar and coniferous wood.
