In the past, the wet soils in the valley were used as meadows or grasslands. These provided hay that served as 'fuel' for the cattle. The meadows were irrigated with water from the Demer. This brought with it sludge particles and minerals. As a result, flowers such as marsh marigolds, cuckoo flowers and cuckoo flowers grew among the grass. The drier places in the valley, which were usually closer to the village centre, were used as fields or orchards
