Like the other walled courts in the area, this castle originated in the 11th -12th century. It was once the home of a family that bore the name of the village: the 'de Eppenghems'.
This chivalric family has been known since the 12th century in the region of Grimbergen and Mechelen.
It was a medieval motte, in the 18th century with a formal construction (300 m long canal with island garden) and in 1783 a classicist country house. The park was transformed between 1812 and 1820 into a romantic 'river landscape' of 5.5 hectares.
Currently, the castle is inhabited by the Schmitz family, a family whose members have belonged to the Belgian nobility since 1985.
