post office

Description

Description
Posteryen, see inscription on the postal list. Eclectic corner building from 1897, see the façade stone, designed by J. Vercoutere (Izegem); in use as a post office until 1981, now vacant. Anchored brick façade with five + four bays and two stories under a slate gable roof featuring six dormers beneath tent roofs. Use of natural stone for, among other things, door and window frames, lintels, and wall bands. Horizontal façade articulation through drip lists and the extended parapet with, among other things, tile panels; overhanging wooden cornice. Incorporation of traditional elements such as the gabled ends with weather vane of the slightly protruding corner risalits. Characteristic of the former post office building type is the square corner tower, projecting on arches and consoles on the upper floor, accentuated by small turretlets and a belled spire with a small lantern in a baroque style. Rectangular windows under arch fields with, among other things, glazed tiles in a checkerboard pattern; on the ground floor barred.
Interior: converted open space box office with a central cast iron composite column on which the iron beams rest, supported on the side walls by block pilasters with consoles. Former sleeping quarters of receiver's residence on the upper floor, see building plan. To the right, a lower adjacent building that originally served as "receiver's residence" (see building plan) and later as a tavern, see inscription.
