On old maps you can see that the Doylijkstraat used to not run straight ahead. At this place the main road turned east (turn right if you come from above the hill) and then closed on the Roomstraat. Now it seems like that road is fairly new. But it's just the opposite. The map of Ferraris that you see here dates from the end of the 18th century. There you see two things very clearly. The Doylijkstraat as it is now continued for a while but then became a narrow path and connected as a narrow path just before the river on the Roomstraat. There was a bridge that took you over the Molenbeek. You can also see very clearly that there was no habitation at all along the Doylijkstraat at the end of the 18th century.
