The history of the village of Thorembais-les-Béguines is closely linked to that of the mighty abbey of Villers-la-Ville. It owned several properties in the village, including the Mellemont farm, which was considered the largest barn in the abbey. At the end of the Middle Ages, the domain of Thorembais included 14 farms and more than 1300 cultivable hectares, managed by a tree cutter named by the abbot of Villers. The Mellemont farm was founded as early as 1153, just after the foundation of the abbey. In 1336 a priory is assistant of the agricultural exploitation. This priory was overthrown by Louis XIV's troops at the end of the 17th century and rebuilt in 1730. The farm buildings were reworked and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. Declared national property after the Revolution, the farm is sold in 1798. As for the priory, victim of a fire in 1881 and still badly damaged during the First World War, it was destroyed in 1918. The farmhouse, considered the largest in the village, is surrounded by an enclosure with a Stations of the Cross from the early 19th century. The whole is accessed via a monumental portico decorated with a niche in which a statue of Saint Bernard stands and in the courtyard the coat of arms of the abbot of Villers-la-Ville Jacques Hache. Surrounding the farmyard are the mansion of the barn (1730-1738) and the barn itself, dating from 1687. The farm is still owned by the family of the princes of Savoy.
