The Molenbeek valley in Flemish Brabant is known as the cradle of the Belgian paper industry. This craft industry was established in this region from the 16th century because the fast-flowing streams were extremely suitable for the installation of water mills. Under the impetus of the industrial revolution, the water mills evolved over time into smaller and larger factories; New machines were introduced again and again and the production processes were improved again and again. The paper mill Herisem and the former Cardboard Factory Winderickx is today in Belgium a rare witness to the development of paper and the mechanism (r)evolution in this sector. This old industrial site is one of the last remnants of the once flourishing rural paper and cardboard industry in Flemish Brabant. The entire site consists of the original paper mill, the cardboard factory, the associated farm (with grain mill) and a centrally located house with former office. The site is surrounded by 16ha of pasture, fields and woodlands in the Molenbeek valley. The buildings together with the landscape are protected as a monument and landscape by Royal Decree and form the domain "Herisem".
