In 1036 a castle was built on the left bank of the Meuse. It served as a residence for the Counts of Loon and later for the Prince-Bishop of Liège. Several troops besieged the fortress, which was eventually reduced to rubble by Dutch troops.
The site was purchased in 1878 by F. Caïmo, district commissioner in Tongeren, who had a castle built in eclectic style in memory of his wife Carolina, who died young.
