From this path along the Dijle you have a beautiful view of the Remy tower. The Remy tower is a well-known sight on the Leuven canal. In 1855 the industrialist Edouard Remy (1813 - 1896) founded a company here. It would become one of the largest rice starch producers in the world. With the factory, and famous white tower, Remy would not only leave his mark on the view of the Leuven canal, but also on the village of Wijgmaal and the city of Leuven. For example, he founded a bathing facility for poor workers. As a tribute, the current resting place in Wijgmaal is named after him.
Even today, the Remysite is a lively business park. The Ons group, umbrella organisation of KVLV, among others, is one of the companies currently located there. Remy has since been renamed Beneo-Remy. Rice is imported from all over the world and used for all kinds of applications. The delivery is made both by road and by canal. For example, the ship Ludivine delivers 450 tons every week.
If you want to know more about the interesting history of Remy and Wijgmaal, you can find this in the publication 'Straathistories - De Wijgmalenhoek' of the Working Group From Wicmale to Wijgmaal.
